Description

.50CAL is a small range of specialised garments that come only in our Time Worn finish. They will appeal to those who appreciate the nostalgic charm of a true vintage flight jacket.

This process is entirely hand done, which takes hours to achieve. The result is a jacket that is still brand new, but you get something that has a vintage lived-in patina that you can continue to add to from the first time you step out your door.

Original A-1s that are still in existence are few and far between, but those that are, are generally well worn. Being made from Capeskin (sheep) the leather is softer than other hides such as steer and horse, and therefore sustains scuffing and grazing more easily. The .50CAL A-1 captures perfectly this vintage appeal.

Standardised on November 27th 1927 as a Summer flying jacket, it was the very first of the knitted waist and cuff wind-cheater type flight jackets. It was a style that was to set the basic outline for flight jacket design for decades to come.

Synonymous with early aviation heroes such as Jimmy Doolittle, the A-1, although superseded by the A-2 in 1931, was still in limited use during WWII, and was not declared obsolete until September 29th 1944.

We have sourced an amazing 100% veg-tanned Capeskin, which is finished in the tradtional pre-war technique which gives the leather a very natural and clear look as was used on the original garments of the early 30s. The quality and handle is outstanding, giving you a garment that exudes vintage character and appeal.
