Description

Introduced during WWII the N-4 was an intermediate weight ‘field jacket’ that was the U.S. Navy’s counter-part to the U.S. Army’s M-41. Primarily it was designed for units that would be operating on shore, such as beach battalions and units like the famous 'Seabees', hence it’s army-like olive-drab shade of green for land camouflage.

Whilst the US Army M-41 was soon superseded by an altogether heavier duty combat jacket - due to the somewhat harsher conditions of demanding combat activities - the N-4 proved to be more appropriate for the US Navy as it continued to be produced and utilised after the war, and into the ’50’s

The practicality of the N-4 is that it is light, yet warm. The shell is made from a light but strong weave poplin cotton, and the lining is 100% melton wool. The neat and trim fitting cut is very contemporary and stylish, which means it suits every day casual wear even today.

Although a seemingly simple garment to produce the N-4 is difficult to get right if one wants to really capture the look and feel like the wartime originals. This is due to the very fine weave quality of the materials. Producing an authentic recreation of this model has been a mission of ours for many years and that goal has now come to fruition.

We have taken particular care to get everything right. Constructed in Japan by the masters of vintage recreations, the poplin shell has the right density and mappy feel of the originals. The custom-made lining was produced in the UK to our specification and shipped to Japan, and to finish off the product we sourced new-old-stock wartime Conmar zippers for the front closure. The tailored cut of the original design has also been captured beautifully, giving you the finest recreation of an N-4 that has ever been produced.
